The Business of Art

Why do we put a price on artwork? What is art really worth? Can we price artwork?

Art today has become commercial and its main purpose seems to reflect making a profit. Many cases you can see artists neglecting their interests and ideas to create something that the masses may enjoy more and actually buy. Money is made off of digital prints of modern artists works. This is not necessarily a bad thing however, Artists need to make a living as well. How do we price art though? what makes one piece worth thousands and another millions? In my opinion, art is the embodiment of one's genius, their enlightenment made physical. Shouldn't this creation be priceless? Many old works that are forever placed inside famous museums cannot be bought. These paintings and drawings achieve their full value by not being able to be sold with any amount of money. Most commercial art is sold so short of its potential to supplement the life of the artist. This compromise seems to me what many refer to when they speak of the end of painting.

Notice none of the responses refer to the true genius expressed in the piece.
